“A heartwarmingly weighty movie.”—Tomris Laffly, RogerEbert.com

Talk Cinema returns with one of the most moving and heartfelt films of the year. Joaquin Phoenix delivers a tender performance that won audiences over at the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. Now is your first chance to see it in Louisville.

Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) and his young nephew forge a tenuous but transformational relationship when they are unexpectedly thrown together in this delicate and deeply eloquent story about the connections between adults and children, the past and the future, from writer director Mike Mills (Beginnings, 20th Century Women).

As a public radio host interviewing children across the country about their thoughts about the future, Johnny is flummoxed when his sister takes him up on his offer to watch her bright, but emotionally fragile son. While he easily connects with the children he interviews, his nephew provides some unique challenges. When his sister is waylaid with a family emergency, Johnny’s time with his nephew is extended, deepening their bond. With Gabby Hoffman. 2021, U.S., DCP, 108 minutes. Rated R.

Talk Cinema is programmed by the esteemed film critics and film curators Harlan and Susan Jacobson, featuring a sneak preview screening of an art house film prior to its release followed by a discussion. Be the first to see the latest films and to share your impressions.

Past films have included Spencer, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, The Two Popes, The Farewell, Moonlight, Shoplifters, The Florida Project, and Lady Bird.
