When the Speed Art Museum opened in 1927, featuring a neoclassical design by Louisville architect Arthur Loomis, it was widely hailed as one of the most modern museums in the United States. With its spacious skylit galleries and growing European and American collection, the Speed became an immediate hit for art patrons of all ages and quickly secured Louisville’s stature as a leading cultural center.

Now, following an extensive $12 million renovation completed in 1997, the Speed Art Museum is focused on fulfilling an ambitious mission: bringing great art and people together. In 2000, the Speed presented Rembrandt to Gainsborough: Masterpieces from England’s Dulwich Picture Gallery, an exhibition which drew over 83,000 visitors including 15,000 school children. Visitors attended from 18 states, over 1000 different zip codes, and 11 foreign countries. The Speed was truly honored to be one of only two places in the U.S. to host the exhibit and was thrilled be able to share so many wonderful masterpieces with such as large audience.

The Speed continues to bring exciting programs and exhibitions to the community and the region. We hope that you will enjoy this website and that we will see you at the museum soon!
