Students in all grade levels are invited to participate in the "What Makes America Great?" Contest in conjunction with the Speed's presentation of A Brush with History: Paintings from the Collection of the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.

To enter, please explore the National Portrait Gallery’s A Brush with History website and learn more about the great American scientists, authors, statesmen, and military leaders depicted in the exhibit. Then write a letter about what makes America great as if you are one of the people featured in the exhibit. Pretend to be General George Patton and think about what he would have thought makes America great. Or Benjamin Franklin. Or artist Mary Cassatt. Or scientist George Washington Carver. There are 75 great Americans to choose from.

To enter, please complete the permission form so we may display your letter and include it with your letter. Also include your name, address, phone number, email address, school, grade level, teacher's name, and teacher's phone number so we may contact you if you win.

All letters will be put in a book for display in the Family Activity Center in the exhibition.

A winner will be drawn each week at random. Winners will receive a free tour of the museum for their class and free lunch from Subway.


Rules for "What Makes America Great"

To enter the WHAT MAKES AMERICA GREAT contest, a person between the ages of 1 and 17 may (i) visit The Speed Art Museum website at www.speedmuseum.org, view the 'Great Americans' featured in the Brush Exhibit, write a letter about What Makes America Great using the 'voice' of a great American featured in the Brush Exhibit website; or (ii) send a card with name, school, address and phone number to the The Speed Art Museum,2035 South Third Street, Louisville, Kentucky 40208, or leave such card at The Speed Art Museum with the Visitor Services Desk. Limit of one entry per person per week. The contest begins on November 12, 2001, and all entries must be received by no later than January 20, 2002. Winners will be drawn weekly at random, beginning on November 19, 2001. The Speed Art Museum's WHAT MAKES AMERICA GREAT contest is void where prohibited by law. No prize will be awarded to any person ineligible to receive the prize under law. No purchase is necessary to participate in the WHAT MAKES AMERICA GREAT contest. Rulings by The Speed Art Museum are final. The winner and up to thirtyÊclassmates of the winner will receive free admission to The Speed Art Museum for a tourÊand a free lunch provided by Subway. The probability of winning shall depend on the number of entries received. Persons not attending preschool, kindergarten, grades 1-12 of school systems in Kentucky and Indiana and employees of The Speed Art Museum and members of their immediate families, are not eligible. Any applicable taxes on any prize will be the responsibility of the winner. Students must submit a signed parental consent form for their work to be displayed at the museum.
