Sèvres
As 18th- and
19th-century European porcelain goes, the Sèvres factory
set the standard. Originally started in 1740 at Vincennes, located
east of Paris, the manufactory came under royal patronage in the
early 1750s. It moved to Sèvres, located on the route to
Versailles, in 1756, and in 1759, King Louis XV transformed the
factory into a state-owned industry. The patronage of Louis XV
and succeeding monarchs, nobles, and other wealthy clients inspired
luxury porcelains made to the highest aesthetic and technical
standards.
