These moccasins were part of an ensemble purchased by Lieutenant
Lee Alexander at Fort Rice, North Dakota, around 1873 for 100 ponies.
The ensemble--which also includes a richly decorated war shirt and
leggings, a pipe bag, quiver and bow case, and quirt--was probably
the work of a single artist, as suggested by the coordinating bead
colors and geometric patterns that decorate the individual objects.
