Moccasins, Sioux, about 1860
Collected by Lt. Lee Alexander at Fort Rice, N.D., about 1873
Native leather, beads, metal cones, horsehair, sole of reused painted parfleche
Museum purchase 1937.69.6

These moccasins were part of an ensemble purchased by Lieutenant Lee Alexander at Fort Rice, North Dakota, around 1873 for 100 ponies. The ensemble--which also includes a richly decorated war shirt and leggings, a pipe bag, quiver and bow case, and quirt--was probably the work of a single artist, as suggested by the coordinating bead colors and geometric patterns that decorate the individual objects.
