What is Art Detectives?
As the American author, Henry Thoreau, once said,
"It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see."
With this notion in mind, The Speed Art Museum has designed a program that takes the Museum to classrooms all over Jefferson County. Students become "Art Detectives" with sharpened skills of observation and comprehension.
Tailored to students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, Art Detectives brings artwork, cultural artifacts, conservator tools, and mysteries to the classroom. It is an unique experience that gives students the opportunity to act as museum professionals as they study and handle actual objects.
Art Detectives mirrors the actual practices used by curatorial professionals when handling delicate pieces. This includes a favorite of the students: wearing white curator gloves while they learn the importance of preservation in a museum. Students discover the history and culture of the objects, as well as the valued aspects in an object. They gain a heightened awareness that allows them to look at art and museums from a more analytical perspective.
