The Speed is committed to providing challenging opportunities that provide career-enhancing experiences. A Speed internship can improve your skills and fulfill criteria set by both the museum and your academic institution.

Internship periods and application deadlines are:

Spring (January - May)
Summer (May - August)
Fall (September - December)

Although internship opportunities are not always available, we will consider intern applications for art related and non-art related departments including:

  • Curatorial - assist professional staff with research, and exhibition and permanent collection related projects.
  • Preparation Services - assist professional staff with gallery/exhibition preparation and maintenance, art movement and storage.
  • Office of the Registrar - assist professional staff with cataloging, record keeping and condition reporting.
  • Education (including the family and children's interactive gallery) - assist professional staff with programs, lectures, interactive experiences, outreach and community collaborations, including School and Teacher programs, Adult classes, Docent development and training and Youth and Family programs and camps.
  • Library ­ assist professional staff with cataloging, shelving, and accessing books and periodicals.
  • Development ­ assist professional staff with development projects and research, office assistance, and follow-up.
  • Marketing and Public relations ­ assist professional staff with marketing and public relations projects and programs including After Hours, member events, and grass roots marketing and audience development programs. Office assistance also required.
  • Visitor Services ­ assist professional staff with guest relations, ticketing and tour programs and projects as well as guest surveys and other hospitality functions.
  • Special Events ­ assist professional staff with all aspects of events including set-up and break-down, meeting clients and vendors, and office projects such as record keeping and database upkeep.
  • Director’s Office ­ assist professional staff with research, records maintenance and inter-institutional collaborations.
  • Finance and Accounting ­ assist professional staff with finance and accounting projects.
  • Human Resources ­ assist professional staff with policy and procedures, research, development and maintenance of: projects, programs, systems and record keeping.
  • Information Technologies ­ assist professional staff with all facets of LAN computer operations, including network administration, user account management, LAN architecture, and user applications support.
  • Building/Facility Services ­ assist professional staff with engineering and maintenance policies and procedures, projects, and event logistics.
  • Security/Protection Services ­ assist professional staff with maintenance of policies and procedures, site surveys and risk analysis.

To apply for an internship, please submit the following:

1. Letter of interest that details:

  • Availability (i.e., start and end date, days of the week available, full time, etc.).
  • Area of interest (i.e., preparation services, office of the registrar, curatorial, library, education and the interactive gallery, marketing and public relations, development, special events, human resources, finance and accounting, information systems, building services, security, etc.).
  • Reasons for wanting to intern with the museum including what you hope to gain from the experience and what we may expect from you.
  • If this internship will be for academic credit, the academic requirements for internships at the institution you are attending including the name and contact information for your intern advisor.

2. Resume of your employment, volunteer, intern and academic experience.

3. Contact information for a minimum of three employment, volunteer, intern and/or academic references. Please include the name, address, telephone number, length of time the person has known you and the capacity in which he or she knows you (i.e., university physic teacher, current employer, pastor, etc.).

4. Mailing address, e-mail address and telephone number where you can be contacted both at school and at your permanent address. Please include the dates you will be available at each location.
