Frantisvek Vízner (Czech, born
1936)
Cylinder, 1990, glass.
Partial and promised gift, Adele and Leonard Leight
Collection 1992.18.54
The most striking characteristics of Vizner’s
works in glass are the simple unadorned geometric forms
marked only by blocks of color. Unlike most contemporary
glass artists he rejects fluid expressive forms. His
work relies heavily on principles established in twentieth
century modernist design. Ornamentation is stripped
away to reveal pure geometric shape and color. He works
in a limited range of forms, cylinders, bowls and plates,
machine cutting them into pieces like Cylinder.
With these forms he has developed a highly rational
visual language.
