“Questions our understanding of honesty, trust and fellowship.” —Bilge Ebiri, Village Voice

One of the darkest comedies ever created about the art world, The Square goes right for the jugular cutting through issues of race, class, gender and pomposity with great irreverence. Achingly funny, the sacred cows of the museum world are all put up for slaughter.

Christian is the flashy curator of a contemporary art museum in Sweden, a divorced but devoted father of two who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next exhibition is “The Square,” an installation which invites passersby to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings.

Sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals. Christian’s foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile, the museum’s PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for “The Square.” The controversy over their viral ad sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. 2017, Swedish, DCP, in English and Swedish with English subtitles, 145 minutes. Rated R.
