“Meticulously structured.”—Stuart Klawans, The Nation

Romeo, a physician living in a small mountain town in Transylvania, has raised his daughter Eliza with the idea that once she turns 18, she will leave to study and live abroad. His plan is close to succeeding–Eliza has won a scholarship to study psychology in the U.K. She just has to pass her final exams–a formality for such a good student. On the day before her first written exam, Eliza is assaulted in an attack that could jeopardize her entire future. Now Romeo has to make a decision. None of the solutions for the situation use the principles he, as a father, has taught his daughter.

Internationally acclaimed director Cristian Mungiu returns with a powerful and universal study about the imprecision of parenthood, the relativity of truth and the ambiguity of compromise, revealed by a father-daughter relationship. The story is conveyed with a unique and uncompromising vision. A selection of the Cannes Film Festival. 2016, Romania/France/Belgium, DCP, in Romanian with English subtitles, 128 minutes.

Harlan Jacobson’s Talk Cinema
A Curated Series of Surprises

This national series, programmed by the venerable film critics and curators Harlan and Susan Jacobson, features a sneak preview screening of an art house film before its release, followed by a discussion. This series occurs monthly with events through April.

Last year’s selections included provocative documentaries, indie comedies, foreign films, and Oscar-nominated titles such as 45 YearsDheepan, and The Lady in the Van—all prior to their release. The September selection was the adaptation of the best-selling book A Man Called Ove, the October edition followed with the ground-breaking Moonlight, and the Cannes Palme d’Or winning I, Daniel Blake in November, and the Oscar-shortlisted film Toni Erdmann in December.
