This sumptuous film about the life of German painter Paula Modersohn-Becker demonstrates the perseverance and courage it took for a woman to stay committed to making art on her own terms in the early 1900s.
The exuberant 24-year-old woman rejected the conventional art school painting instructions and explored her unique style. She flourished in the countryside art community of Worpswede, where she developed friendships with artist Clara Westhoff and poet Rainer Maria Rilke. By marrying painter Otto Modersohn, she hoped to find a creative soulmate. Five years of domesticity took its toll on Paula’s spirit, and she traveled alone to Paris to begin her studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Headstrong Paula was unstoppable: she embarked on a period that became her most compelling; a long-awaited period of creative fulfilment and self-realization. 2016, Germany, DCP, in German and French with English subtitles, 123 minutes.
