“Sumptuous, haunting, and unusually tender.”—Aaron Hillis, Village Voice

Opening on one of the most delightfully lavish Christmas celebrations in the history of cinema, we see life through the eyes of ten-year old Alexander. He’s a member of the sprawling Ekdahl family, a bourgeois Swedish theatrical family at the turn of the twentieth century. Along with his sister Fanny, the duo must bond together when tragedy strikes and the family faces new financial and religious constraints.

Winner of four Oscars, this is director Ingmar Bergman’s most autobiographical film filled with magic, sensuality, and joy. 1983, Sweden, 35mm, in Swedish with English subtitles, 188 minutes. Recommended for 16+.
