Arguably no one did more to shape our understanding of the modern American city than Jane Jacobs. In her epochal book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, author and activist Jane Jacobs helped change the way we look at urban living. Citizen Jane is a timely tale of what can happen when engaged constituents fight the power for the sake of a better world. The documentary focuses on Jacobs’ most dramatic battle of the 1960s when she went up against the ruthless New York power broker Robert Moses. Moses had plans to divide and destroy the historic neighborhoods of Greenwich Village, Soho and Little Italy with expressways.
Director Matt Tyrnauer (Valentino: The Last Emperor) vividly brings to life Jacobs’ 1960s showdown.
