“There is no other director who can transfix the human condition with such galvanic images.” —Tony Plamer, The Spectator

Stanley Kubrick produced and directed this adaptation of Anthony Burgess’s 1962 dystopian crime novel A Clockwork Orange. Noted for its visual design set in the futuristic Britain, the film focuses on the antisocial delinquent Alex (sinisterly played by Malcolm McDowell) who is drawn to classical music and “ultra-violence.”

While the horrific crime spree of Alex’s gang is disturbing, the conversion therapy imposed by the police and psychologists upon his arrest is equally unsettling as Kubrick captures a world in which crime and punishment are both brutal.

The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture in 1972 and was a critical and box office success. 1971, U.K., DCP, 136 minutes. Rated R.
