PM – Museum Director Charles Venable Lecture Series: China
and Glass in America, 1880-1980 Please join Charles
L. Venable, the Speed’s new director, for the third
lecture in his three-part lecture series entitled Art & Industry
in America. Dr. Venable is an award-winning
scholar in the field of American decorative arts and has
published widely on the subjects of silver, ceramics, and
glass. Of particular interest to him is the impact of industrial
production on ancient crafts as practiced in the United
States in the 19th and 20th centuries. Dr. Venable will
discuss the impact of industrialization, as well as changes
in dining, manners, and cooking that affected the design
and creation of tableware over 100 years in China and
Glass in America, 1880-1980. Admission is free. (Auditorium)

celebration of local Asian cultures for families. As one
of the areas largest Asian events, families can enjoy the
arts and traditions of countries across Asia including
China, India, Japan, Korea, Laos, the Philippines, Uzbekistan,
Samoa and Vietnam including traditional music and dance
performances, informational displays, hands-on experiences
and games. Admission is free. Admission to Art Sparks,
Interactive Family Gallery is $5, free to museum members.
