The Alliance
is the Speed Art Museum’s volunteer organization. The purpose
of the Alliance is to stimulate public interest in all facets
of the museum. It plans many programs and events each year including
the museum’s principal fundraiser, the Speed Museum Ball,
held every first Saturday in March.

Programming
Committee
The Programming
Committee plan a variety of educational programs, which may include
lectures, classes, local museum tours and private home tours.
Past lecturers have included leading Egyptologist Dr. Kent Weeks
and the Curator of Dutch Painting from The National Gallery of
Art, Mr. Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr. Volunteers are needed in a variety
of ways to help with these events.
Speed Ball
Committee
Volunteers
for this committee assist in the planning and execution of the
Speed Ball throughout the year. Known as Louisville’s premiere
ball, the Speed Art Museum Ball is known for its spectacular floral
arrangements, wonderful food, and great music. The annual Ball
raises over $100,000 for the museum.
Docents
The Speed
Art Museum is a leader in the field of interactive touring. Volunteers
lead tours of the permanent collection and special exhibitions
to visitors of all ages. For more information on becoming a docent

First Impressions
First Impressions
volunteers greet visitors as they enter the museum. These charismatic
and energetic volunteers convey the museums warmest welcome,
provide maps, and answer questions about the museum.

Volunteers
for this committee assist with the planning and execution of all
the fundraisers throughout the year. In addition to the Speed
Art Museum Ball, a new fundraiser is being developed for 2006,
the “Big Top Tent Sale,” which will be an upscale-resale
event.

Members of
this committee assist with our Alliance membership events and
the publication of the annual Alliance Membership Directory.
Social
Committee/Special Events
Volunteers
for this committee assist in the execution of any social occasions
assigned to the committee by the Alliance President. Events include
membership events, new members events, the Alliance Board’s
annual Holiday Party, and the year-end Joint Board Luncheon.
Travel
Committee
Travel Committee
volunteers plan and lead art-oriented travel opportunities for
museum members. Various trips are offered throughout the year
and have included local visits to corporate art collections, day
trips to Nashville, overnight trips to Chicago, New York City
and many overseas excursions such as China, Belgium, London, and
Venice.

The Volunteer
Committee assists in the management of the volunteer program,
including placement, training, recruiting, and recognition of
existing and potential volunteers.
Art Learning
Center/Family Programs
Volunteers
in the Art Learning Center provide support to the ALC gallery
staff and serve as greeters and hands-on helpers for gallery visitors.
Family program volunteers assist in ushering, acting as an artist
assistant, and visitor relations.
Museum
Library
Volunteers
in the museum library are responsible for updating catalog cards,
dealers’ catalog cards, and pamphlet files. They are also
responsible for compiling information for the scrapbooks.
Office
Assistants
Volunteers
are needed to assist with small mailings, filing, and computer
work where possible.
Museum
Shop
Volunteers
act as the primary customer service provider for the Museum Shop.
Duties include greeting customers, ringing sales, answering questions
about merchandise, and assisting the shop staff with the maintenance
of the shop displays and stock.

Alliance Membership
is $25 for a single membership, $30 for a dual membership, and
$5 for a full-time student. Alliance members must also be museum
members.
